Are You Prepared for a Power Outage?

This is the time of year when we need to make sure we are prepared for power outages. We encourage you to take a few moments and review the information below.

Purchase needed items for your home, office, and car: flashlights, batteries, AM/FM battery powered radio, food.

Keep cash and change on hand; in power failures ATMs may not work.

Phones that are cordless and phones with answering machines are power dependent. Have one that does not require power to operate in case you need to call 9-1-1. Keep your cell phone charged.

Keep your car fuel tank at least half full because gas stations rely on electricity to power their pumps.

If you have an electric garage door opener, find out where the manual release lever is located and learn how to operate it.

Check your smoke detectors to make sure the batteries are operating. Have a fire extinguisher and know how to operate it. Have a fire evacuation plan and practice fire drills.

Check your smoke alarm and see what type it is. If it is hard-wired, make sure it has a battery to back it up in the event of a loss of power.

Consider purchasing a smoke detector with batteries as a backup. Special smoke detectors are available for the hearing impaired.

During the power outage unplug all small appliances to avoid a power surge. Leave one light on so you know when the power comes back on.

Tall Ships Sail to Bremerton

The Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain continue their summer 2011 tour of Puget Sound-area ports with a stop at Brownsville August 15 through August 21. The ships will bring their popular Battle Sails, plus an expanded series of value-priced Evening Sails, to the Port of Brownsville Marina at 9790 Ogle Road Northeast in Bremerton. They are scheduled to arrive the evening of August 15.

Evening Sails include demonstrations of tall ship handling, an opportunity to help the crew raise a sail, and a beautiful Puget Sound sunset. Battle Sails feature a recreation of a typical 18th century naval skirmish, complete with cannon fire using real gunpowder (but no cannon balls). Groups of eight or more for Battle Sails automatically receive a 15% per ticket discount at the time of purchase. Tickets are available online or by calling 800-200-5239. Early reservations are strongly recommended.

Are you raising money for a cause through a bake sale? Is your church putting on a Holiday musical?

Each week we receive numerous electronic requests to broadcast information about community events and organizations over the Megatalk airwaves. I am thrilled by the magnitude of responses that are flowing into the community@kitz1400.com inbox and I wanted to pass along some simple tips that will greatly enhance the chances of your information being aired on our stations as well as other media entities.

- Include an abstract text with the 5 w's in the body of your email, even when sending and attachment.

Most radio stations will be able to put this information into a script and cut and paste for web and social networking applications. The majority of the emails I receive go as follows, "Can you please broadcast information about our event coming up in November? (please see attachment)"

- Plan accordingly before your email blitz.

Utilizing online databases is an effective way to navigate the broadcast management hierarchy. In Washington, the WSAB (Washington Association of Broadcasters) directory lists the primary contact (including my name) at each media outlet. You can find it here. It certainly helps to address your email to a specific individual.

Last week we received a note requesting airtime the day before an event... Enough said!

Puma's coaches and star players gave introductory lessons on the fine art of soccer to kids of all ages, and unveiled a fantastic pro-shop stocked full of Pumas SC gear.

County Budget Crisis

Kitsap county is facing a budget crisis. The county is not unique in this, neighboring counties, states, and our country also face major budget crisis's. A recent article in the Port Orchard Independent http://www.pnwlocalnews.com/kitsap/poi/news/70213037.html shows the insanity of our local government.

What makes this kind of budget cutting a good idea? Where are the priorities of our government? Public safety is the top government priority. Police, Fire, Emergency services, need to be run efficiently, thrifty, and provided before any other program. This provides a safe environment for the citizenry.

Next is to promote the general welfare. Here we get roads, transportation, education, government run health programs, community regulatory programs, community programs. When the government takes care of giving us a safe environment and a method to interact in our community, we are then free to go about freely and live our lives.

The last priority actually saves money, they are to secure our liberty for ourselves and our posterity. In this, they save money by cutting the programs that are for our 'general welfare' that restrict our freedoms and make the citizenry dependent on government for it's welfare.

In a budget crisis like this, it is important to provide for all of our safety, by funding, police, fire, and emergency services, and then evaluate the other programs that 'promote the general welfare' for importance and begin by cutting full programs from the bottom of the list until the budget is balanced. Half programs don't help anyone, they are a waste of time and resources.

Currently our government is showing it's true colors, it is either insane or an extortionist. Instead of using common sense and looking out for the citizenry, our government is harboring unimportant programs on skeleton budgets, and taking the ax to vital services, so that they can come to us and demand a raise in taxes. They seem to be holding our safety for ransom, and they have the power to do this, because the citizenry keeps re-electing the incumbents who are bent on extorting our hard earned money.

It's great that Kitsap county plans to stop punishing criminals and protecting the general public, to stop promoting the general welfare, and demand more money for their failure.

The county plans to save money by depriving citizens of use of lakes

Kitsap county is facing budget problems. No they're not alone; the whole state and most of the country are in the same boat. Actually, a lot of citizens are also in the same financial boat. Now the county has found a way to save some money.

Kitsap county plans to close Horseshoe Lake and Wildcat Lake to the public for the summer. This is amazing. Only the government would come up with a brilliant idea like closing a natural geographic area to the public to save money. Closing the pubic facilities like restrooms, and not maintaining the landscape would make sense. The county wouldn't have to pay for the plumbing, electricity, or the rangers and landscapers necessary to keep the parks operating as they were. That would save a lot of money. However, locking the gate and keeping the public out of a lake seems over kill.

Why not remove the trash cans, and post a sign stating: Park Use at Your Own Risk. The lakes have existed fine since before the government took over maintaining them. The lakes will remain lakes without being maintained. Local folks should feel free to visit the lakes and swim as they see fit. People that enjoy the lakes may even feel compelled to keep them nice. It is ridiculous to fence natural resources and keep the public out, because a lack of maintenance budget. Nature has maintained the lakes since before the county butted in, and will continue after the county is good and gone.

Keep the parks open and unmanned. Count on the people to be responsible and keep the parks in use and clean. It's not too difficult to go out into the natural world, take only memories, and leave only foot prints.
